چکیده

abstract background: ventilator-associated pneumonia (vap) is a common side effect in patients with an endotracheal tube. this study aimed to evaluate the effect of an upper respiratory care program on the incidence of vap in mechanically ventilated patients. materials and methods: in this clinical trial, 62 patients with endotracheal tube were selected and randomly allocated to intervention or control group. in the intervention group, an upper respiratory care program was performed and in the control group, routine care was done. modified clinical pulmonary infection questionnaire was completed before, and on the third, fourth, and fifth day after intervention. data were analyzed by repeated measure analysis of variance (anova), chi-square, and independent t-test through spss 13. results: the results of this study showed that until the fourth day, the incidence of vap was similar in both intervention and control groups (p > 0.05), but on the fifth day, the incidence of vap in the intervention group was significantly lower than in the control group (p < 0.05). conclusions: the results of this study showed that in patients with an endotracheal tube, an upper respiratory care program may reduce the incidence of vap. therefore, in order to prevent vap, nurses are recommended to perform this upper respiratory care program.

Effect of Acupressure on Gastric Content Aspiration in Mechanically Ventilated Patients Hospitalized in Intensive Care Units

Background and Objectives: Aspiration is a serious complication that occurs due to delayed gastric emptying in mechanically ventilated patients. Aspiration results in increased rate of pneumonia and death. Acupressure can increase gastric motility and prevent aspiration. This study aimed to determine the effect of acupressure on occurrence of gastric content aspiration in mechanically ventilate...

Strategies for the Prevention of Ventilator-associated Pneumonia in the Intensive Care Units: A Review

Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP) accounts for 80%-90% of hospital-acquired pneumonia cases in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). VAP occurs 48-72 hours after intubation, and is observed in 27%-29% of patients with endotracheal tube, and its risk increases with the increase in the duration of mechanical ventilation. In this review study, papers published from 1996-2018 were used to investigate st...

The prevalence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection in patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia hospitalized in intensive care unit

Background: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a type of hospital acquired pneumonia with the mortality rate between 27% and 76% that develops more than 48–72 h after endotracheal intubation. Possible causes leading to this infection can be Mycoplasma pneumoniae. The objective of this study was to determine the presence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae in bronchoalveolar samples of patients with ...
